the Ghantewala the historic sweet shop Delhi 1790- 2015 .

The Year 1790 - 225 years ago, Ghantewala Sweet shop Opens for business.

As this historic sweet shop downs shutters in Delhi fast emerging as the gastronomic Epicenter of India, we feel a sense of loss. For soon it will disappear not without a trace but sans the “taste” from our collective gastronomic memories. This for a restaurant where emperors, Prime Ministers, films stars and the rest of us feasted.

They used to say of shah Alam II who was King Emperor of India in 1790 – Shehensahe - Shah Alam shenshahi diil – te- palam. His “empire” extended from his fort to Delhi’s periphery.

Diwali festival was a busy time they just put bundles of cash into the jute bags no time to count - Sweet that.

The two iconic items were
Sohan Halwa an ultra sweet protein packed dry fruit rich preparation in thickened milk concoction.

&
Kalakand this one too is from condensed milk but the sweet flavor is far more subtle.

In 1790 !! when Ghantewala Opened doors these things were the going ons:

The French had their  revolution @ Ghanetewala we had ours

1st US President George Washington gave the  1st state of the union address

Ironically in 1790 the Lifeboat was 1st tested at sea, by one Mr Greathead

Scientist Lavoisier formulates Table of 31 chemical elements.

Tipu Sultan was fighting the British at Mysore
And an Indian entrepreneur Lala Sukh Lal Jain gave thought the world was sweet !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
